The Heartbreaking Toll Covid has Taken on Healthcare Providers

Now that we have entered our second year of the Covid-19 pandemic in the Midwest, we want to do something we’ve never done before: which is to acknowledge the heart-breaking toll this virus has taken on the world as a whole, but especially the medical community and the healthcare providers that have been standing and working on the front-lines of this pandemic.

Two years ago serving as a nurse was an extremely rewarding career. Sure, as with any career, there were highs and lows – but the highs of contributing to the saving of a life – or the joy of being part of a medical break-through – or the extreme feeling of satisfaction knowing you provided the best care possible to your patients – far, far outnumbered the “lows”.

But things have changed….

Over the last year and a half our healthcare providers have experienced an overwhelming amount of “lows” treating patients with extremely high acuities, watching too many of them pass away, day after day, leaving a shift with a little bit of uncertainty and a whole lot of fear, that no matter how many precautions they took, bringing Covid home to family and loved ones was a real possibility.

Unfortunately it does not look like we are over the hump just yet – but we are grateful for our nurses that progress has been made with several different vaccines that show promising results in the prevention of severe illness and death. While not perfect – we find hope that progress is being made.

While we support everyone’s right to choose whether or not they wish to be vaccinated – we do follow the protocols given to us by several of the hospitals we staff when it comes to the Covid-19 vaccines. We’re finding a growing number of hospitals are requiring their medical staff to be fully vaccinated. All the nurses that work for us, staffing these hospitals, are 100% compliant with these policies.

None of this is easy, and challenging to say the least. We understand the mental exhaustion that comes with wondering “when will it end?”

We wish we had an answer. But for now – all we can do is do our best to support our healthcare providers to the best of our ability – and to support the hospitals in which we staff.
